How To Make Sodium Silicate (Water Glass)
Просмотров 6 тыс.5 лет назад
It is fairly easy to make sodium silicate and I use it for refractory purposes. It is expensive locally so I began to make my own. In this video I use silica gel cat litter and liquid lye sold locally as BBQ cleaner. You can use lye crystals (sodium hydroxide) and silica gel from the dry packets that come with electronics. The usual mix is 200 gm lye and 300 gm silica gel with maybe 100 ml wate...
How To Stop Spray Foam Can From Sealing Itself
Просмотров 10 тыс.5 лет назад
Here is a way to stop a can of expanding foam from sealing itself shut after one use. The cans say on the label that you will likely only get one use. This is not good enough. You will need lacquer thinner or acetone for this procedure. No more wasting a nearly full foam can.
Casting More Aluminium Skull Heads And A Failed Hand

New Casting Furnace Melting Aluminium Scrap Into Ingots
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.5 лет назад
I made a new casting furnace to go with my new forge. In this video the new furnace is used to melt aluminium scrap into ingots and muffins. These will be used in upcoming videos to cast various items. Casting the scrap into bars allows it to be cleaned up so that items made from these bars will be of good quality. The furnace is made from a 5 gallon steel pail lined with firebrick and refracto...

I recently made myself a new single burner propane gas forge. It gets tested in this video as I forge a dagger and put a stone handle on it. I also made the burner. It is forced air, uses a MIG tip as a gas orifice, and has a stainless steel flare. The blower speed is controlled by a variac.
How To : Determine MOT Output Voltage
Просмотров 49 тыс.6 лет назад
Here is a way to be able to figure out the output voltage of a microwave oven transformer. Basically we hook up the mains AC to the HV secondary of the MOT and measure the low voltage coming from the primary of the MOT. Dividing the two voltages gives us a ratio. Multiplying the line voltage by this number will give us the MOT output voltage. Warning : The output of an MOT is lethal. Do not wor...
How To Make Ferric Chloride For Etching
Просмотров 27 тыс.6 лет назад
Here is a way to make ferric chloride that is used for etching steel by blacksmiths. You need hydrochloric acid (muriatic or pool acid) and steel wool. Reacting steel wool with pool acid gives ferrous chloride, which will turn to ferric chloride with exposure to the air. This must be done in a well ventilated area due to corrosive fumes. You should use gloves and eye protection. Do not use an a...

mate plexiglass is expensive. wy dontyou jsut do this on an empty room or behind a wall and protect the camera instead? like its cheaper to just sweep the pieces. otherwise you could use something lees fregile like plastic films (bags etc) to cover the bottle

I noticed that a lot of MOTs are being scavenged to rewire the secondary as DIY spot welder for Lithium battery tabs where the primary still runs at 120 and the secondary only has up to 3 turns of hefty gauge cable to draw the large current needed. Reversing the connection as you did, equates to the same thing except that the output voltage is about twice while the current is halved. You need about 200A for a 15 mil thick tab. People are using 12VDC, 7Ah LIPO batteries rated at 50C and a control PCB that parallels MOSFETs to drive the timing within milliseconds. You got 6VAC and the microwave is rated at 1200W, so the current should be 200A max.. N Channel MOSFET works on DC, but can drive the 6VAC if one end of the coil is used as COMMON source. It will then see it as a 12V DC wave that is smoothed out using a 220uF 25VDC electrolytic capacitor. The Gate can be driven from a 9V DC battery with its negative connected to the COMMON source. Theoretically, this should works and save us the rewiring time and energy to achieve the same goal. By the way, those PCB spot welder controller only cost lees than $20.

No surprise it can harden. All you need is an excess of carbon to compensate for the loss of it stripping the oxygen of the oxide away and binding with it preferentially to form CO² and CO (monoxide). You're like double the temperature that carbon starts stealing oxygen in that reaction. I know it was 6 years ago, but if in doubt, add lamp or bone black.

A time back, I had thought about using such an AC compressor on a racecar (long-distance road track), but there are a number of hold-backs. First off, it would take a HVAC guy to run new seamless tubing runs for you, secondly, not sure there's enough refrigerant oil in the system to support that much larger of a cooling circuit, next is the coolant used in the A/C versus what would work in an automotive system, and last but not least, a thermostat-controlled kick-out (like an automotive centrifugal clutch) that would kick out compression when it became too high...all in all, I gave up the idea. Nowadays, they have DC A/C compressors to do this very same thing with. The idea was to not leach horsepower from the car to have A/C, to stay cool on 95-degree days while in a fire suit and helmet.

You can also do it by connecting a multimeter in uA-Range through a large resistor (at least 10 Megaohms) to the secondary and power the transformer like you would do normally. Then calculate the output voltage.
